I also found that on occasions that I really wanted or needed to have some available, those were the times there wasn’t any in the freezer, or I’d have to wait for one to defrost!

The only bone broth that I could find commercially for pets was frozen, and whilst I tried some excellent products, it still took up freezer space and just wasn’t as convenient as I wanted. I found myself searching for something that I could have in the cupboard to call on as needed, but despite all my searches, I just couldn’t find one. That was it, I had to produce my own! I looked at many ways to produce a shelf stable broth. I didn’t want a powder or concentrate, which had gone through a lot of processing, losing a lot of its goodness and taste in the manufacture, so after a lot of searching and research the idea for Karnlea bone broth was born. A packed from fresh, 100% natural, highly nutritious broth with super high amounts of collagen.”

Creating a Green Paw Print
Right from the start, it was important that Karnlea had the right credentials, both in their ethically and sustainable sourced produce and in the product packaging. Karnlea bone broth is produced from antibiotic and hormone-free grass-fed animals from co-operative farms.

Chondroitin
Chondroitin is a key component in supporting your pet's joint health by slowing the deterioration of cartilage. Clay
Clay is a powerful natural ingredient used to support your pet’s health from the inside out. Colostrum

Digestive Enzymes
Digestive enzymes are produced in the pancreas, and are secreted to help break down food efficiently in your dog's small intestine. These enzymes, help convert food into smaller pieces that can be used for energy, cell growth, and various bodily functions. Modern diets are lacking in enzymes, generally through heat processing, such as in kibble, canned and cooked food. Even raw diets can be lower in enzymes—in the wild, dogs would get extra enzymes from the guts of their prey, not just the raw meat.

Echinacea
Echinacea (Echinacea spp), or purple coneflower, is best known for its uses in supporting the immune system. Alongside a number of active consituents, echinacea possesses natural anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. These properties provide natural support for a healthy immune system in your pet.

Egg Shell Membrane
Egg shell membrane is the nutrient-rich protective barrier found between the shell and the albumen, or egg white. As a nutritional supplement, egg shell membrane is a source of undenatured collagen and hyaluronic acid. Proteins elastin and glucosamine promote tendon and joint health respectively.

This combination of powerhouse ingredients for joint health make it easy to see why egg shell membrane has been shown to reduce pain and improve function in dogs suffering with joint problems.

Evening Primrose Oil
Evening Primrose Oil is high in gamma linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid. Ideal to help maintain healthy skin and coat condition and reduce scurfiness or dryness. Evening Primrose Oil is believed to restore the balance in reproductive hormones that can otherwise influence behaviour and coat quality.

Fenugreek
Fenugreek, also known as trigonella foenum-graecum is a member of the pea family. Fenugreek flowers May to July and is yellowish-white, singly or in pairs. Fenugreek has anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antiseptic and anti-viral properties, and works well synergistically with garlic.

This licensed herbal medicine is used to relieve the symptoms of arthritis but it can also be used for the symptomatic relief of minor infections, skin conditions and coughs. It can also be useful in pets with atopic dermatitis (eczema), or cystitis.

Garlic
Garlic is known as the king of the herbs and is full of nutrients. Garlic can be given as a general supplement because of its wide-ranging action on the body as well as being a specific herbal remedy for coughs and upper respiratory conditions. Garlic is an antioxidant, expectorant, has anti-viral, antiseptic and antibiotic properties. Garlic can be used to reduce the level of parasites in dogs and is effective to repel fleas and worms. Garlic stimulates normal digestive processes and can be used for a wide range of skin conditions. Garlic can remove toxins from the body, supports the immune system to help increase resistance to infection, especially for the older pet.

Glucosamine
Glucosamine can be used for the repair of connective tissues such as cartilage by stimulating the production of glycosaminoglcans (GAGs). Glucosamine is often supplemented to augment the body's normal production and especially when in old age and arthritis demand exceeds the body's normal production. Green Lipped Mussel
Green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) are a type of shellfish native to New Zealand, known for their distinctive green edge along the shell. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, and antioxidants, they are great for supporting joint health.

Lavender
Lavender, or lavandula, has been used for medicinal purposes for over 2,500 years. Lavender is a calming herb which may help to relieve anxiety, especially for anxiety surrounding car journeys. In addition compounds of the oil in Lavender have antifungal and antimicrobial effects which may aid healing, may help with allergies, burns and ease aches and pains.

Milk Thistle
Milk Thistle is a herbal liver protector and can protect the liver in many ways. Milk Thistle's active ingredient is silymarin which protects the liver at the level of individual cells. Milk Thistle is also a potent antioxidant slowing the inflammatory response helping to prevent further liver damage. Milk Thistle can be beneficial for those pets on daily medications which are metabolized by the liver or damaged livers. Milk Thistle may also be useful for problems which are related to the liver such as skin conditions, gastrointestinal upsets and dysfunctions in the immune or hormonal systems.

Mint / Peppermint /Pennyroyal
Mint is an aromatic herb that has historically been used to help soothe upset stomachs, reduce gas, reduce nausea and help with travel sickness. Pennyroyal is the smallest and strongest smelling of the mint family with the oil in the leaves helping to repel fleas.

MSM
MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a naturally-occurring organosulfur compound. Organic, biologically active sulphur is extremely important for health and the formation of connective tissue, healthy skin, amino acids and blood proteins. The largest concentrations are found in joints, hair, skin, and nails. However, as part of the aging process, MSM in the body begins to decrease and so deficiencies may occur.



MSM has many benefits including: as a natural analgesic and pain reliever which can help in joint pain such as in the case of arthritis, hip dysplasia and other joint problems, MSM can alleviate the symptoms of some allergies and MSM is an antioxidant which quenches free radicals produced as a result of stress and pollution.

Mushrooms
Mushrooms and the many beneficial bioactive compounds they contain can benefit the health of your dog in a number of ways and have been used to support health for thousands of years.

An important component of the mushroom are the beta-glucans which are protected by the mushroom’s thick chitin wall. When extracted this process makes the important beta-glucans and other active medicinal ingredients available to your dog.

Microbiome support - the fibre in mushrooms that consists of beta glucans and chitin, provides food to many beneficial microorganisms in the microbiome. A healthy microbiome supports a balanced immune system as well as the immune system response to potential allergens.

Researchers have isolated over 150 compounds from the Neem tree that work synergistically to naturally protect itself from bacteria, fungus, pests, and other threats.

Neem's Beneficial Properties The Neem tree has been used for over 4,000 years to treat a variety of health problems ranging from skin issues, dental care, infections, and inflammation to malaria. The most pronounced beneficial features of the Neem tree have been it's strong pest repellency, anti-viral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Quercetin
Quercetin is a plant pigment (flavonoid) commonly found in apples, dark berries and leafy green vegetables. Its natural antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties make quercetin beneficial for all dogs, but particularly those who suffer from allergies, seasonal itching or need an immune boost.

Quercetin has a low bioavailability on its own – combining it with vitamin C, digestive enzymes like bromelain, or opting for liposomal quercetin, can improve absorption in your pet's body.

Rose Hip
Rose hips or Dog-Rose (Rosa Canina) are at their best in autumn when they look stunning in the hedgerows. Rose hips are a great source of vitamin C but it also provides an abundance of other nutrients including vitamins A, B1 and B2 and is particularly rich in antioxidants. Rose hips also help to maintain a healthy collagen and therefore can help with joint pain.

Seaweed
Seaweed is high in protein and is one of the richest source of minerals and amino acids found in a plant source. Seaweeds are rich in iodine. Seaweed have many health benefits including supporting the immune system, energy production, skin and coat health especially pigmentation.

Slippery Elm
Slippery Elm Bark is the inner bark of the slippery elm tree which is not only packed with nutrients, but has wonderful lubricating and anti-inflammatory properties. Slippery Elm acts as a soothing, demulcent that lubricates the digestive tract.



Use when your pet has an upset stomach, for example as a result of a change in food which may cause a temporary GI upset. This can also be a result of tension or stress, such as a change in a daily routine or going on a trip. In cases of diarrhea consider slippery elm to ease the symptoms, along with a probiotic supplement for pets. For severe, acute GI problems consult your veterinarian promptly.

Spirulina
Spirulina is an algae which is 60% protein and which is readily absorbed into the blood stream making this perfect for dogs which are unwell or have lost their appetite. Spirulina is also high in the essential fatty acid Gamma Linolenic acid (GLA) which promotes healthy skin and coat. Spirulina is an antioxidant which supports the immune system, especially helpful for the older dog. Spirulina can also support their aging eyes. Spirulina can also help the dog which loves to eat grass.

Turmeric (Curcumin)
Tumeric is the common name for Curcuma longa an Indian spice. One of tumeric’s major active constituents includes curcumin which is responsible for the vibrant yellow colour and is the principle curcuminoid and generally considered its most active constituent. Turmeric has antioxidant properties and may help to calm the GI tract.

St John's Wort
St John's Wort known as Hypericum Perforatum is a perennial herb indigenous to Europe. St John's Wort contains numerous compounds with documented biological activity. St John's Wort is often used to support anxiety and also has antiviral properties.

Valerian
Valerian is a famous herb to calm nervous disorders from anxiety, tension and discomfort both in humans and pets. Valerian is also an anti-spasmodic so ideal for upset stomachs. Valerian is very effective for most animals with separation anxiety or insomnia when your dog may whine or cry. Valerian can also be effective at times when your pet is most anxious such as before and after surgery, traveling, loud noises such as fireworks or thunderstorms, moving house.
Vitamin B
Vitamin B is an essential group of nutrients that supports your pet’s overall health and wellbeing. As a water-soluble complex, these vitamins play a key role in energy production, nervous system function, and maintaining healthy skin and coat condition.

Including B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin) and B12 (cobalamin), Vitamin B helps convert food into usable energy while supporting everyday vitality and balance.

Because Vitamin B is not stored in the body, levels can deplete more quickly, particularly in pets with increased nutritional demands or digestive sensitivities. Supplementation is a simple way to provide additional support where needed.

Vitamin C
Dogs do produce their own vitamin C, but under certain conditions such as stress or disease, this production is likely to be reduced and supplementation maybe useful.

Vitamin C also combats the damaging effect of the free radical and is necessary to support a healthy immune system. Vitamin C promotes healing, and bone and cartilage formation depend on collagen as a building material, which is only synthesised in the presence of vitamin C.

Witch Hazel
Witch Hazel is an excellent astringent, decreasing swelling and easing associated pain. Witch Hazel will cool inflamed skin and will make hot spots feel instantly better.

Healthful Pets, which launched in August 2015, has been set up by Kay Johnson and Sue Wallwork - both animal owners and qualified Naturopathic Nutritional Therapists, with a special interest in a more natural approach to supporting the health of our pets. Healthful Pets is also supported by a fully qualified, experienced and practising Veterinary Surgeon and Homeopath.

I am a practising Nutritional Therapist, after studying for three years at the College for Naturopathic Nutrition in Manchester. I have two boisterous Labradors – Pepper and Barney and an Asian Tabby called Kitty.
