From kitchen to counter…Karnlea founder Lara McCullough reveals how the need to combine nutrition and convenience led to a pet product revolution.

“For several years now, every time we had a Sunday roast, I would painstakingly make bone broth for my two dogs. This was a lengthy and often messy process, and despite my enthusiasm to feed bone broth (and my dogs’ obsession with it) I found it not always practical to make. I would make as much as I could at a time, so I needed to find fridge space – or freezer space – I didn’t really like the smell around the kitchen for the long periods it took to cook, and frankly sometimes it was just time consuming when I had a very busy life and was tired. I also found that on occasions that I really wanted or needed to have some available, those were the times there wasn’t any in the freezer, or I’d have to wait for one to defrost!

The only bone broth that I could find commercially for pets was frozen, and whilst I tried some excellent products, it still took up freezer space and just wasn’t as convenient as I wanted. I found myself searching for something that I could have in the cupboard to call on as needed, but despite all my searches, I just couldn’t find one. That was it, I had to produce my own! I looked at many ways to produce a shelf stable broth. I didn’t want a powder or concentrate, which had gone through a lot of processing, losing a lot of its goodness and taste in the manufacture, so after a lot of searching and research the idea for Karnlea bone broth was born. A packed from fresh, 100% natural, highly nutritious broth with super high amounts of collagen.”

Creating a Green Paw Print
Right from the start, it was important that Karnlea had the right credentials, both in their ethically and sustainable sourced produce and in the product packaging. Karnlea bone broth is produced from antibiotic and hormone-free grass-fed animals from co-operative farms.

Mushrooms and the many beneficial bioactive compounds they contain can benefit the health of your dog in a number of ways and have been used to support health for thousands of years.

An important component of the mushroom are the beta-glucans which are protected by the mushroom’s thick chitin wall. When extracted this process makes the important beta-glucans and other active medicinal ingredients available to your dog.

Microbiome support - the fibre in mushrooms that consists of beta glucans and chitin, provides food to many beneficial microorganisms in the microbiome. A healthy microbiome supports a balanced immune system as well as the immune system response to potential allergens.

Psyllium
Psyllium is a safe, natural source of soluble fibre used to support healthy digestion and regular bowel movements in dogs and cats. Suitable to be added to raw, cooked and kibble diets, psyllium absorbs water within the digestive tract, adding bulk to stools and forming a soothing gel. This can help to regulate stool consistency, alleviate constipation and diarrhea, support anal gland issues, and promote overall gut health.

There are two main forms of psyllium: psyllium husks and whole psyllium seed.

Psyllium Husks: Psyllium husks are the outer layer of the seed and contain a highly concentrated source of soluble fibre. They are commonly used to support firm stools, digestive regularity, anal gland health and healthy gut motility.

Whole Psyllium Seed: Whole psyllium seed includes both the husk and inner seed, offering a gentler source of natural fibre alongside additional nutritional value. It can help support healthy digestion and balanced stool quality.

As psyllium absorbs water, it should always be fed alongside adequate moisture, such as wet food, bone broth or goat milk. Please ensure plenty of clean, fresh water is also available.

Pumpkin

Quercetin
Quercetin is a plant pigment (flavonoid) commonly found in apples, dark berries and leafy green vegetables. Rose Hip
Rose hips or Dog-Rose (Rosa Canina) are at their best in autumn when they look stunning in the hedgerows. Rose hips are a great source of vitamin C but it also provides an abundance of other nutrients including vitamins A, B1 and B2 and is particularly rich in antioxidants. Rose hips also help to maintain a healthy collagen and therefore can help with joint pain.

Rose hips are also ideal for grooming products as well. Rosehip seed oil from rose hips is a lightweight, fast-absorbing oil rich in naturally occurring Vitamins C, A and E, along with nourishing omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. It helps to moisturise and condition the skin, support healthy skin cell renewal, and improve overall coat texture and appearance. Particularly beneficial for dry, flaky or sensitive skin, rosehip oil absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy residue, helping to keep the coat soft, healthy and manageable between baths.

Seaweed
Seaweed is high in protein and is one of the richest source of minerals and amino acids found in a plant source. Seaweeds are rich in iodine. Seaweed have many health benefits including supporting the immune system, energy production, skin and coat health especially pigmentation.
Slippery Elm
Slippery Elm Bark is the inner bark of the slippery elm tree (Ulmus rubra), also known as American Slippery Elm. Naturally rich in mucilage-forming polysaccharides, it develops a smooth, gel-like consistency when mixed with water, helping to coat and soothe the digestive tract.

Some Slippery Elm products can be added directly to food, while others are prepared with water before use; such as AniForte recommends mixing its Slippery Elm Bark Powder with water, briefly heating and then allowing it to cool before feeding. This pre-hydrates the slippery elm, allowing the mucilage to form before it is given, rather than relying on the powder to absorb moisture and form its gel-like consistency after it has been eaten.

Traditionally used as a soothing demulcent, Slippery Elm can be particularly useful for dogs and cats with sensitive stomachs or during periods of occasional digestive upset. Changes in food, travel, changes in routine and periods of stress can all temporarily affect normal digestion and stool consistency.

Slippery Elm can also be used alongside a probiotic supplement for pets as part of a broader approach to supporting digestive and gut health. Persistent or severe digestive problems, including diarrhoea or vomiting, should always be discussed with your vet.
