Liver Supplements for Cats

The liver is one of your cat's hardest-working organs, handling detoxification, producing bile to aid digestion, and processing nutrients, medications and waste. Our range of natural cat liver supplements is chemical-free and chosen to support healthy liver function and the body's own detox processes, using gentle, traditionally used ingredients such as milk thistle. Because the liver works so closely with the gut, supporting digestion and gut health often goes hand in hand with good liver care.

The liver and kidneys are the body's two main organs of detoxification, so it's worth looking at kidney support too, and older cats in particular can benefit from extra help as they age. Liver problems can be subtle in their early stages, so if you notice changes in appetite, energy or any yellowing of the eyes or gums, contact your vet, and it's worth checking with them before introducing anything new.

The liver is one of your cat's hardest-working organs. It handles detoxification, produces bile to aid digestion, stores energy and vitamins, and processes nutrients, medications and waste. Keeping it healthy matters for your cat's whole body. Our range of natural cat liver supplements is chemical-free and chosen to support healthy liver function and the body's own detox processes, using gentle, traditionally used ingredients.

What your cat's liver does

The liver is remarkably versatile. Among its many jobs, it filters toxins from the blood, produces bile to help digest fats, stores energy and essential nutrients, and breaks down medications and waste products. It also has an impressive ability to repair itself, which is why supporting it day to day is so worthwhile.

Signs of liver trouble in cats

Liver problems can be subtle at first, then develop quickly, so it's worth knowing what to watch for:

  • Reduced appetite or weight loss
  • Low energy or lethargy
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Increased thirst
  • Yellowing of the eyes, gums or skin (jaundice)
  • A swollen tummy

Natural ingredients for liver support

  • Milk thistle (silymarin) – the best-known herb for liver support, traditionally used to support and protect liver cells
  • SAMe – often used to support liver function and antioxidant levels
  • Dandelion – traditionally used to support healthy bile flow and gentle detox
  • Antioxidants – help protect the liver from everyday oxidative stress

When liver support can help

Gentle liver support is often considered for older cats, cats recovering from illness, those on long-term medication that the liver has to process, or simply as part of a natural approach to detox and wellbeing. Because the liver works so closely with the gut, supporting digestion and gut health often goes hand in hand with good liver care. The liver and kidneys are the body's two main organs of detoxification, so kidney support is worth considering too.

Supporting your cat's liver at home

  • Feed a good-quality, balanced diet that isn't overly rich or fatty
  • Make sure fresh water is always available
  • Avoid unnecessary chemicals, and never give human medicines, many of which are toxic to the feline liver
  • Keep an eye on weight, as both obesity and rapid weight loss can affect the liver
  • Give older cats extra support as they age

When to see your vet

Liver health is something to take seriously. Any yellowing of the eyes, gums or skin needs urgent veterinary attention, and so does a cat that has stopped eating, as cats that go without food for even a day or two can develop a dangerous liver condition (hepatic lipidosis). If you notice changes in appetite, energy, thirst or weight, contact your vet, as liver issues are best diagnosed and managed professionally. Supplements support healthy liver function but are not a treatment for liver disease, and it's always worth checking with your vet before introducing anything new.
